The media could not be loaded.
I've been using Foscam cameras for about seven years now. The R4 is by far the most compact and best looking of the various lines to date. They have since updated the lens for a wider field of view as well as adding 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Out of the six I own, only one is the updated version but the improvements came just in time. While they work fine on 2.4 GHz, the possibility of interference from outside sources is high enough to incapacitate the cam. I experienced this very problem when my next door neighbor erected a high gain TV antenna. While not rated for full exposure exterior installations, the four that I have under my eaves have been through temperature ranges of 28 to 104 degrees without domes or covers of any sort. Rain, of course, would be fatal to these. Dust in the long-term could be problematic, but in almost three years, it has not been an issue for the pan/tilt motors and gears on the older units.

Set-up is straight forward and can be done without physically connecting the cam to your router with an ethernet cable like some cams. You'll need to use the Foscam app for this as well as any future firmware updates, but the initial installation is all you really need the app for. In fact, OWLR makes a cleaner, far superior app if you want to monitor via app only. For me, it made more sense to allow a 3rd party security client to handle recording and viewing chores. I use Blue Iris (see attached screen shots). Through Blue Iris, you can really take advantage of all the camera's features as well as embedding date/time stamps outside of the Foscam app, which has proven to be problematic (maybe the only actual issue I have with the Foscam product itself). You''ll need to constantly sync the time with the Foscam app to keep them accurate. Blue Iris also allows for finer adjustment of brightness, contrast along with a myriad of other options that you'll never have access to without it. All that's needed is a mid-spec PC with some dedicated hard disk space for storage of video files. A companion app for BI is also available.

In all, this system (six cams - not including electrical modifications to supply power under the eaves of my house) was just a little under $600. It's already "paid for itself" as my driveway cam captured the moment a neighbor's kid vandalized my wife's new car. Without that footage we would have never known who was responsible or had the leverage to get the repair paid for.

You HAVE to use browser plugins (run full EXEs) or their app. You can NOT access or configure this thing through only a browser (without using their plugin).

The Camera plugin works only in IE, while the MyFoscam.com plugin works only in Edge. It's armature hour, get a wired or wireless Arlo Q, or a Blink. They have their flaws too, but not as bad as this one (I have all three).

FOSCAM forwards you to AmcrestCloud.com for their cloud service. AmcrestCloud will not accept R4 information. Their tech support says they only recommend their own cameras. It keeps thinking my username/password is not the admin one, but it is, and the previous page VERIFIES it, so there is noway to get here if it wasn't (see picture). Their support agrees, they have no clue what's wrong.

You can view the camera (not setup monitoring/alarms ect) on their own site. I tried setting things up through their cloud support, and it wants access to everything, including your admin password on your camera, which in turn has your email username & password (in order to send you emails) and your home network wifi SID and password. Not to mention access to everything the camera is seeing and hearing. And even then it can't fully configure you cam, and the picture it receives for live viewing is horrible (cloud view gets the subset/low res).

Both their viewing, or Amcrest's non-functioning cloud recording/remote-viewing REQUIRE the administrative username and password, despite being able to setup Viewer and Operator accounts. The Admin account of course in turn has access to all your other passwords for email and wifi and such.

Edit: after about three weeks this thing went nuts, while mounted in the same place, so deducting the final point from two to one star. It suddenly started having a grainy picture after dusk, and those grains move, so it CONSTANTLY goes off every few seconds. I also tried reducing the detection areas and setting the sensitivity to minimum. This morning I have thousands of email alerts.

Tried to exchange it, but guess they don't allow it since I bought it as a lightning deal and they would want the full price now. So just returning this to Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars jaw dropping clarity for daytime and infrared pictures.

Update post purchase: I've had the camera now for two weeks and it worked fine. However, with no warning, no changes to my settings, the camera, etc. nothing changed, I'm at work and it I cannot connect via my cell data or my work wifi. I came home, reset, rebooted, reloaded, reconfigured, deleted the app, added the app, called tech support, language barriers in trying to reset, reconfigure, reboot, reloaded, etc. and nothing. I'll get an email telling me other means of how to fix this. Well that's not comforting. I see a return to Amazon in my near future.

I purchased this for home viewing / security use. I've used this camera for over a week and love it so far for the clarity of the picture and ease of the app. Extremely easy Plug&Play, 5-7 minutes start to finish. The 4.0 Pixel pictures are jaw dropping clear, infrared pictures too. I like the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the noise and motion detection as the notifications were going off constantly at first. When inside my home with the wifi, the connection to live feed is quick and moving the camera lens up/down, side / side, zoom in / out moves almost instantly as you touch the controls on your phone screen. However, when away from the house and using cellular connection there is a bit of lag time, sometimes 2-3 seconds, which can mean a lot depending on how you have the camera angled for the view of the room it's set up in. Not sure if that's due to cell tower, cell service or what. I tried using the sim card and after inserting, it hosed up the feed so I removed it, unplugged to re-calibrate, plug back in, still didn't work. Haven't had time to contact customer service yet to get this to work (I'll follow up on this when I get an answer). The two way audio is great and clear in sound. There is a subscription fee for 7 day storage and 30 day storage but I found the fees much less than other companies of the same type of service. I found the app very easy to use. The attached pictures are of my open kitchen, living, dining area at 11AM, the infrared is of the same area at 11PM. Live feed of both is just as clear. I've already recommended to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camera, what a bargain!

I continue to be impressed by Foscam cameras! I have the R2, which I really liked, so I decided to go all out and give this one a try too.

I mostly use these cameras inside my house to watch my small pets while I am away. My main concern is actually at night, because they are nocturnal. I am always a little leery of getting cameras because if they don't work well in the dark, they aren't useful to me. This cameras truly does allow me to see every little detail of what my fuzzbutts are doing and who is doing what in their little homes. I can see them very clearly, and I can also hear them and talk to them. Too bad they don't really like it when I do that. Haha. Truly, I like them more than they like me. <3

Installation/setup of the camera was pretty smooth, and the app is super easy to use. I can use the app on my phone to watch from anywhere. I can also change the view of the camera in the app, which is very useful (and a feature that was not present in my more expensive camera by another company, which I will not be buying again). I don't often have to change the view because the viewing angle is pretty wide. Even at night, this camera allows me to see all of what I usually want to see without having to move it up, down, side to side, etc. But if I want to, I can turn it!

There is also a whole bunch of other settings that I can imagine I will find useful in the future. I can set the camera to move continuously, and of course I can have it alert me to movement in the room (and it stores the alerts so I can check them at a later time!). I can snap a photo (which the app saves for me), I can flip the image, I can change to night mode or day mode or simply have it on auto. I can adjust the image quality/smoothness, and I can have both of my foscam cameras on one app. I can even name them by different rooms of the house for easy reference. All of these features come at no extra charge. I do believe this camera is going to save me a lot of money on house sitters when I'm out of town. :)

Overall, I cannot think of anything more I would ever want in a camera like this. I actually wouldn't have been able to think of half of the things that Foscam already included in this camera. Highly recommended!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Best network camera I've owned for home use

This camera is amazing. Finally something which lives up to expectations for picture quality, set-up, and ease of use. Its web based interface is powerful and provides full access to network settings (which is not available via the app). The picture quality is clear and sharp with lots of detail, although zooming in reveals some loss of detail. Manual/Automatic IR illumination switches it to night mode which quite a performer although even the color mode reveals great sensitivity in normal light with decent color. The exposure is automatic although the web interface provides a full range of color and exposure tweaks with three levels of access: visitor, operator, and administrator. There's an HDR setting which flattens and brightens the exposure to pull out ALL the shadows in a contrasty scene easily in low light. MicroSD card slot, network jack with indicator lights, and clearly understood voice prompts during setup which I immediately turned off via the web interface. The motors toss that camera around to where you want to point it faster than any other product I've own and that's on "Medium" speed with a couple of speed settings above and below. It comes with a small wall mount and is quite stylish compared to geeky looking competitors. Setup was very easy via the app by scanning a QR code and it connects fine to my WiFi without installing the antenna. The picture looks great on the Android phone app - with options for movement and/or audio alarms and scheduling.

So.... close to being perfect. Here's a bunch of annoying stuff.

Their firmware is VERY heavy-handed to get you to pay for cloud storage for images - which, likely a good idea but there's no way to connect to commonly available competitors like DropBox. There's FTP and email yet there doesn't appear to be any secure connection options. I could NOT configure the camera without giving up an email address and creating a cloud account, which was free, yet more aggressive than Apple's iPhone setup.

Chrome is not supported. On the Mac I needed to use the Safari browser AND use FLASH to view the stream, which thankfully Apple permitted me to do. There are plug-in's for both viewing the camera and viewing cloud storage which must be installed to do anything. Both plug-in's have an unidentified author and require some effort under OSX to bypass the warnings to install. So... you must install unidentified software to connect a camera and microphone to your network which MUST be connected back to their servers with YOUR email address and QR code. Being an Apple owner I'm not at all paranoid that yet another company is recording everything it sees and hears. Welcome to the family, HAL. It kinda looks like HAL, doesn't it?

Although it looks like you can setup a plain vanilla connection via the net for viewing with any web browser, that browser must have the plug-in even for viewing. There's a streaming option as well which VLC is likely to pick up which may eliminate the plug-in's for viewing although I'm a bit disappointed that with all the video protocols these days I have to resort to a non-standard plug-in... unsigned from an unknown author.

edit 5/25/18: I had forgotten that I left enabled the motion detection setting. I had removed the app from my Samsung since it appeared to be chewing up my battery. Still, the camera managed to send a snapshot of myself in my underwear to my phone and store it in my photo gallery, even with the app removed. I did not notice the photo which was quietly uploaded. But, when I did, I noticed that the camera added a piece of spam to my photo gallery advertising its cloud service. I've knocked two stars off my initial rating and seriously considering returning it for this gross invasion of my privacy.
